Reseña / Review: The Birthday List by Devney Perry

Happily married to her college sweetheart, Poppy lived a blessed life with the husband of her dreams. Then everything changed. She is no longer a wife. She is no longer the envy of her single friends. Now, people look at her with pity as they whisper a single word behind her back.

Widow.

Years after her husband’s tragic death, years of pain and sorrow and wishing for the life she’ll never get back, Poppy decides to finish Jamie’s birthday list. She’ll do the things he wanted to most. Because maybe, just maybe, if she can complete his list, she can start to live again.

Poppy expects going through the birthday list will be hard. She expects it to hurt. But what she doesn’t expect is Cole. Could the man who delivered the news of her husband’s death and shattered her heart be the one to help her put it back together again?

ENGLISH REVIEW

Take life minute by minute

This story begins with a Poppy and Jamie very much in love, enjoying their first year of marriage, unfortunately as always happens, life took a turn and Jamie is killed in a robbery to a liquor store, so Poppy is left without the love of her life, with the weight of the word "widow" on his shoulders and with a whole life to live.

Jamie had an obsession with making a list of things he wanted to do on every birthday, from very silly things like swimming in a pool full of green Jell-O to illegal things like pulling a fire alarm or more ambitious like buy a restaurant to Poppy.

So, five years later, Poppy decides to leave her sadness and believes that realizing the crazy ideas of Jamie is gonna giver peace to her soul and perhaps like this, let him go.

Cole Goodman ... a sexy policeman who had the misfortune to meet Poppy on the worst day possible by giving her the worst news of her life, but still when he comes back to meet her, five years later, he decides it's time to be with her and put a smile on her again and he'll do anything to make her very happy, as well as helping her make Jamie's list (of course, less the illegal things on that list).

Who could think that the person who gave you a terrible news that changed your life could be the one that put a smile on your face and make happiness and love return to your life?

“I’m not trying to take Jamie’s place or erase his memory or make you forget that you loved him. I’m just trying to explore this thing between us.”

The story leads you to think about many things ... well at least to me, personally, when my dad died in my teens, there were things I knew my father did not do ... not a list, just a few things and I have had the fortune to realize them (unconsciously) for him. So, when I read it I could feel several emotions removed in me, I could understand Poppy a lil’ bit.

It simply teaches you that life does not end, even if disastrous things happen to you in your life, but you have to do the best you can to live it to the maximum minute by minute. Destiny is smart enough to give you what you deserve and what you need, here Poppy needs Cole in her life and Cole needed Poppy in his.

I give it 5 stars, it's a well written story, with many moments of hope, love, family, friends and great lessons because you have to remember that in life the rest is still unwritten...

“-Do you know what I like the best about New Year’s Day? -She whispered.
-What?
-Everyone gets a new beginning.
